What is a DOT SAP?

The Department of Transportation Substance Abuse Professional (DOT SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

DOT-regulated employees and those who work in safety-sensitive positions, public transit, trucking, aviation, maritime, railroad, motion picture industry, or pipeline industries and have violated a DOT drug and alcohol testing regulation, are required to go through the SAP process.

DOT mandated employees must see a Qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). This means the SAP is required to have specialized training, credentialing, and continuing education. The SAP must also follow specific rules and regulations regarding recommended education and/or treatment facilities.

The DOT SAP program is mandatory for safety-sensitive covered employees under the DOT.

Mrs. Rachel Pavlov, MS, LCDC, SAP is a DOT qualified SAP counselor with 6+ years of substance abuse professional experience. View her license here.
